Zinfandel can be tricky with its large clusters - some berries will get ripe and be perfect early on while other berries in the cluster will still need more time. Zinfandel, maybe more than most varieties, forces winemakers to pick at a time when variability within the cluster is still higher than most other varieties. What I love about that is you get both dark and ripe characteristics as well as light and vibrant qualities in every cluster.
