Since joining the family domaine with the 2020 vintage, fourth-generation winemaker Nicolas Weber has brought a thoughtful, progressive approach to both vineyard and cellar. A graduate in viticulture and oenology, Nicolas favours gentle pruning, herbicide-free farming and minimal intervention, allowing the character of each vineyard to lead. His wines are predominantly spontaneously fermented and given time to develop naturally, combining traditional Saar precision with a quietly experimental streak. The wines are beautifully precise and expressive, with a striking sense of place: cool Saar freshness, mineral tension and purity, each cuvée reflecting the distinctive slate or limestone soils from which it comes.

The Auxerrois is a white grape variety that is the product of crossing Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc. The French city of Auxerre in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region is named after it, which shows it must have been a popular varietal at sometime in history. Today, Auxerrois is mainly found in Alsace as well as in Luxembourg and in small numbers in Germany. At Margarethenhof, it grows in the Obermosel, in the Römerberg on limestone soils.

Expect notes of quince, mirabelle plum, and a gentle florally all underpinned a mineral backbone and a gentle but persistent acidity.
