Description
Thalarn is a distinctive expression of Syrah from Castell d’Encus, high in the Costers del Segre region of Catalonia. In a landscape better known for its extremes of temperature and challenging mountain conditions, the wine combines Syrah’s natural depth and spice with a freshness that gives it real definition.
The colour is deep violet-red, while the nose opens with an engaging mix of floral notes, clove and cracked pepper. There is a savoury edge, too, evoking wild herbs and woodland undergrowth, adding complexity to the ripe fruit. On the palate, cherry and other fresh red-fruit flavours are carried by lively acidity and silky, supple tannins. The texture is polished, but the wine retains an underlying energy, with spice and savoury nuances extending into a long, persistent finish.
Thalarn is a thoughtful alternative to more overtly powerful styles of Syrah. Rather than relying on sheer weight, it finds its appeal in the interplay of aromatic detail, freshness and structure. It is well suited to grilled lamb, roast duck or dishes with herbs and pepper, and rewards anyone looking for a Spanish red with both character and restraint.
