RP 96+ The Wine Advocate (Lisa Perotti-Brown)
The 2018 Stagecoach Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon from Louis M. Martini is a powerful yet polished expression of one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated mountain vineyards. Drawn entirely from the expansive Stagecoach site in the rugged Vaca Mountains, this wine reflects the vineyard’s volcanic soils, elevation and exposure, which consistently produce Cabernet Sauvignon of intensity, structure and depth.
Stagecoach Vineyard spans hundreds of acres planted on ancient volcanic terrain, where rocky soils and hillside conditions naturally limit vigour and concentrate flavour. Fruit selection from multiple blocks across the vineyard allows for complexity and balance, combining muscular structure with refined detail. The 2018 growing season delivered ripe, expressive fruit while preserving freshness, resulting in a wine of both generosity and control.
In the glass, the wine opens with layered aromas of black cherry, cassis and ripe red and dark berries, accented by hints of mint, baking spice and subtle earthy nuances. The palate is full-bodied and richly textured, offering flavours of blackberry, dark fruit compote and cola, supported by notes of black tea, hazelnut and savoury undertones. Dense yet finely managed tannins provide grip without hardness, carrying through to a long, smooth and persistent finish.
This is a Cabernet Sauvignon that balances Stagecoach’s trademark power with approachability. While structured for ageing, the wine’s depth of fruit and supple tannins make it accessible now, with the capacity to evolve gracefully over the years ahead. A compelling single-vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet that showcases both site and vintage with confidence.
