Description
Edition Z is a polished, generously styled red from De Toren in Stellenbosch, where the winery has built its reputation around sophisticated Bordeaux-inspired blends. The estate was established in 1999 and takes a meticulous approach to vineyard selection and low-yielding fruit, creating wines that combine South Africa’s generous sunshine with the structure and elegance associated with Bordeaux varieties.
The 2019 Edition Z is led by Merlot, supported by Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It is deeply coloured and immediately expressive, with aromas of ripe black cherry and rich cherry fruit alongside clove, wild herbs and a touch of garrigue. The palate is generous and supple, bringing flavours of juicy blackcurrant and dark cherry, with a subtle mineral character adding freshness and definition.
There is plenty of richness here, but the wine remains beautifully composed. Ripe, creamy tannins give the palate a velvety texture, while the fruit carries through to a long, elegant finish marked by spice and striking minerality. It is a luxurious wine, but one with enough freshness and structure to work equally well at the dinner table.
