Description

The 2019 growing season stands out as one of exceptional classical character for Peter Michael’s estate Pinot Noir vineyards. A wet February replenished soils following earlier dry years, while a cool, measured spring encouraged balanced canopy development without excessive vigour. Flowering arrived later than average, setting the stage for a slow and even ripening cycle. Throughout the summer, restrained vineyard intervention preserved the fruit’s natural freshness and precision, culminating in a later harvest that delivered Pinot Noir fruit of rare harmony, intensity and poise.

Le Caprice occupies a dramatic mountainside setting, rising above 1,000 feet in elevation with steep slopes and predominantly east and north-east exposures. The site benefits from a unique interplay between cool Pacific influences and the gentle warmth of the mountain climate. Its complex soils—composed of clay, silt and volcanic gravels—contribute structure, depth and a subtle mineral signature. Among Peter Michael’s estate Pinot Noir vineyards, Le Caprice is recognised for its expressive fruit profile, refined tannins and polished texture.

In the glass, the 2019 Le Caprice displays a deep ruby core with vibrant crimson highlights. Aromatically, it offers lifted notes of griotte cherry, ripe raspberry and sweet plum, framed by nuances of cedar, clove and fine rosewood. The palate is supple yet focused, unfolding with layers of dark cherry, blackberry and briar fruit, complemented by black tea, forest floor and savoury undertones. The texture is silky and assured, with a long, composed finish that reflects both the pedigree of the site and the balance of the vintage.

This Ex-Cellar magnum originates from long-term professional storage at The Vineyard Hotel, Newbury (UK). Presentation is consistent with extended cellar ageing. Bottled in large format, the wine offers significant ageing potential and is expected to continue developing gracefully over the next decade and beyond, making it a compelling acquisition for collectors seeking both provenance and longevity.
