Description

The first thing to know about Michael David is that the brothers have a sense of humour. The second is that they’ve never let that get in the way of enjoying a good glass of wine — and who could ask for more? These are fun wines, and it’s a pleasure to have them in the portfolio.

The Phillips family have been farming in Lodi since the 1860s, with the current generation now the fifth to grow grapes. Today, they produce a wide range of wines under numerous labels. We originally selected only the Freakshow and Lodi wines, but were soon tempted into stocking many of the others as well. Big, powerful styles with generous fruit, soft silky layers, and long finishes — they’re easy to love and built to please.

Behind the fun, the brothers have a deep respect for their environment, having helped write the Lodi Rules sustainability guidelines and ensuring all their wines adhere to them.

Winemaker’s Notes:
“This is the first Petit Verdot varietal wine produced by Michael David Winery, and one of the few ever made in Lodi. Each year, when compared to other Petit Verdot vineyards, the quality of this lot consistently ranks at the top of its class. Because of its naturally high levels of tannin, colour, and concentration, the wine is always placed into new barrels early in the harvest season.

Most commonly used in Bordeaux-style blends, this 2020 Petit Verdot makes an enticing statement on its own. Deep purple in the glass, aromas of strawberry and raspberry mingle with hints of cedar box and floral notes. The palate is complemented by velvety tannins and voluptuous flavours of plum, dark berries, and cardamom, all framed by a long, complex finish. A rich, weighty, full-bodied red.”
