Description
The 2020 vintage of Les Pavots reflects both resilience and precision, shaped by an unusually dry start to the year followed by late-arriving rains that replenished vineyard soils ahead of the growing season. Temperate conditions during flowering encouraged balanced fruit set and yields close to the estate norm. While much of the season remained cool, a series of late-summer heat spikes accelerated ripening, adding depth and concentration, before a warm harvest period allowed the fruit to be brought in with clarity and composure.
Les Pavots is sourced from Peter Michael’s estate vineyards on the slopes of Mount Saint Helena in Knights Valley, Sonoma County. The site spans nearly fifty acres and climbs to elevations approaching 1,400 feet, with varied exposures and soil compositions contributing to the blend’s complexity. Volcanic, rhyolitic soils lend a distinctive mineral dimension, while careful parcel selection places Merlot and Cabernet Franc on the cooler upper slopes and Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot lower down, resulting in a layered and harmonious Bordeaux-inspired blend.
In the glass, the 2020 Les Pavots displays a deep, luminous red hue. The aromatic profile is rich and expressive, unfolding with dark berry fruits and cassis, complemented by notes of dark chocolate and subtle floral accents. The palate opens with a smooth, plush entry, building toward a broad and finely textured mid-palate. Flavours of black fruit, graphite, black tea and savoury nuances are carried by polished, finely grained tannins, leading to a long, composed and elegant finish.
This Ex-Cellar bottle originates from long-term professional storage at The Vineyard Hotel, Newbury (UK). Presentation is consistent with extended cellar ageing. The 2020 Les Pavots is already beautifully balanced, combining refinement with depth, and possesses the structure to continue developing gracefully over the medium to long term, making it a compelling addition for collectors seeking both pedigree and longevity.
