Description
The first thing to know about Michael David is that the brothers have a sense of humour. The second is that they’ve never let it get in the way of enjoying a good glass of wine — and really, what more could you ask for? These wines are fun, and it’s a pleasure having them in the portfolio!
The Phillips family have been farming in Lodi since the 1860s, and the current generation is the fifth to grow grapes. They now produce a wide range of wines under several different labels. We originally selected only the Freakshow and Lodi wines, but we were quickly tempted into stocking many of the others as well. Big, powerful styles with delicious ripe fruit, soft silky layers, and long finishes — they’re easy to love and designed to please.
Behind the fun, the brothers have a strong respect for their environment. They helped write the Lodi Rules sustainability guidelines and ensure all their wines follow them.
Winemaker’s Notes:
“A favourite varietal of both Michael and David Phillips, Syrah was first planted by the brothers in 1982 after they fell in love with wines made from the grape on a trip through southern France. This vineyard, located just a hop, skip, and a jump from the winery, is one of the earliest Syrah plantings in California. With Michael’s son Kevin carrying the Phillips grape-growing tradition into the sixth generation, this Syrah vineyard was one of the first he managed as Vineyard Manager of Michael David Winery.
Deep ruby in colour, the wine offers layered aromas of berry cobbler, plum, and cedar box. Full-bodied flavours of ripe raspberry, black liquorice, and tobacco lead to a long, captivating finish that will have you reaching for another sip.”
