Description
The first thing to know about Michael David is that the brothers have a sense of humour. The second is that they’ve never let that get in the way of enjoying a good glass of wine — and who could ask for more? These are fun wines, and it’s a pleasure to have them in the portfolio.
The Phillips family have been farming in Lodi since the 1860s, with the current generation now the fifth to grow grapes. Today, they produce a wide range of wines under numerous labels. We originally selected only the Freakshow and Lodi wines, but were soon tempted into stocking many of the others as well. Big, powerful styles with generous fruit, soft silky layers, and long finishes — they’re easy to love and built to please.
Behind the fun, the brothers have a deep respect for their environment, having helped write the Lodi Rules sustainability guidelines and ensuring all their wines adhere to them.
Winemaker’s Notes:
“The explosive and powerful human cannonball pays homage to our roots in Lodi, a region renowned for exceptional Zinfandel. Freakshow Zinfandel showcases the power and grace of Lodi Zin, focusing on the bright fruit and spice characteristics for which both the region and varietal are known.”
Critical Review:
“This wine is concentrated, with aromas of baked red plum, raspberry, huckleberry, dried violet, and sandalwood. Intense, full-bodied flavours of black plum, blackberry, black liquorice, allspice, and maple linger across the palate, evolving into warming spice and supported by grippy tannins.”
