Description

The first thing to know about Michael David is that the brothers have a sense of humour. The second is that they’ve never let that get in the way of enjoying a good glass of wine — and who could ask for more? These are fun wines, and it’s a pleasure to have them in the portfolio.

The Phillips family have been farming in Lodi since the 1860s, with the current generation now the fifth to grow grapes. Today, they produce a wide range of wines under numerous labels. We originally selected only the Freakshow and Lodi wines but were soon tempted into stocking several others as well. Big, powerful styles with generous fruit, soft silky layers, and long finishes — they’re easy to love and made to please.

Behind the fun, the brothers have a deep respect for their environment, having helped to write the Lodi Rules sustainability guidelines and ensuring all their wines comply with them.

Winemaker’s Notes:
“The first Cabernet Franc ever produced by Michael David Winery, and one of the few made in Lodi, this varietal originated in the Bordeaux and Loire Valley regions of France and has since been grown successfully in many other countries. The grapes for this wine come from a nine-acre vineyard on the west side of Lodi, just a stone’s throw from the winery.

Ready to drink now or suitable for cellaring for a few years, the wine is deeply concentrated and dark ruby in colour, with aromas of tobacco, strawberry jam, and cherry. Full-bodied with layers of dark fruit and spice, flavours of blackberry, clove, walnut, and pepper are complemented by hints of sweet vanilla. The long, lasting finish is framed by additional tobacco and spice notes woven into the dark fruit flavours.”
