Machete is Orin Swift’s unapologetically bold take on Petite Syrah, built around the variety’s naturally deep colour, concentration and firm tannic structure. The 2021 vintage brings together Petite Syrah with Syrah and Grenache to create a rich, powerful California red that balances intensity with surprising freshness.
The wine opens with generous aromas of ripe blueberry and blackberry, alongside charred meat, crushed stone and a subtle savoury funk. The palate is dense and full, with layers of black plum and dark stone fruit, followed by notes of game and spice. A lift of candied orange peel and well-judged acidity brings freshness to the considerable concentration, preventing the wine from feeling heavy.
Petite Syrah provides the backbone, bringing its characteristic depth, colour and substantial tannins, while Syrah and Grenache add breadth and aromatic complexity. Fourteen months in a combination of French and American oak, 40% of it new, adds further layers of spice and toast without obscuring the fruit.
