Description

We first encountered PIUS in spring 2022. We met Anthony and tasted his wines while looking out over the rolling vines of Daou Mountain. His 2018 was electrifying — one of the best first impressions I’ve ever had. At the time, we had no idea who our customers for it might be; we simply knew we wanted to work with the wine and placed our first order immediately.

We soon learned more about Anthony Versochi. His résumé includes a ten-year tenure at Daou Estate, where he rose to Senior Winemaker during a period in which Daou experienced the fastest growth of any winery in the U.S. market. When he decided to launch his own label, Daou supported him by allowing him to produce his first few vintages at their winery.

Anthony speaks quickly and passionately, and it became clear that he is an artist in the way he makes wine. First comes the conviction — the vision of what he wants to create — and then the science is applied to bring that vision to life. It felt like one of those rare meetings where you know you’re at the very beginning of something special.

Almost three years on, it is an exceptionally exciting time for PIUS Wines. Anthony is now established on his own estate, planting new vines while rebuilding the winery and tasting rooms. Joined by businessman Peter Twiss and fellow winemaker Bob Lotierzo, the team’s goal is to turn PIUS into one of the finest destination vineyards in Paso Robles.

What we are presenting today is their inaugural release — the first vintage made entirely on their own estate. Anthony’s clear vision of what great wine should be leaps from every glass. The fruit is succulent, the finish flawless, and it is only at the end of each sip that you realise just how beautifully integrated the tannins are. These wines are mouthfuls of velvet — superb expressions of Paso Robles at its very best.

We are delighted to represent these wines in the United Kingdom and are confident they will bring immense pleasure to anyone who lays a few bottles down in their cellar. Drinking beautifully now, they will continue to inspire joy and fascination for decades to come — if they last that long.
