Description
The windswept cypress tree, an unmistakable icon of California’s Central Coast, owes its twisted, gnarled appearance to the constant movement of maritime air. The ocean’s influence on the region is significant, cooling the valleys at night and helping to preserve the grapes’ natural acidity and flavour.
The 2021 vintage saw generous pre-season rainfall in January, followed by an especially dry winter and spring. These dry conditions encouraged the vines to produce small but exceptionally concentrated berries. The Cypress Vineyards Merlot showcases vibrant cherry and currant flavours set against a light touch of oak and framed by medium tannins. Distinct varietal aromas of black cherry and red currant lead to a red-fruited profile reminiscent of a classic claret, with a comfortable palate weight and a bright, refreshing finish. A perfect pairing with grilled kebabs or barbecued short ribs, this wine is delicious in its youth and can be cellared for up to five years.
J. Lohr was founded in 1973 by its namesake, Jerry Lohr, who initially focused on the cool, windswept Monterey coast. After quickly building a successful business producing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from this outstanding terroir, he expanded to Paso Robles in search of a site capable of producing truly great Cabernet Sauvignon — and without doubt, he found it. With the establishment of Hilltop Vineyard, the winery grew rapidly, driven by the quality of Paso Robles fruit and the excellence of the wines produced.
Today, J. Lohr is one of America’s most loved wineries, confident in its quality without pretence or fanfare. A firm favourite in our Cellar, wines such as Seven Oaks and Riverstone remain consistently popular with our customers.
