Description
The 2022 Keplinger Opalus is a beautifully distinctive expression of Grenache from a special block adjacent to the renowned Bien Nacido Vineyard in Santa Barbara County. Bien Nacido had long been a vineyard of particular significance to Helen Keplinger, and it was during the 2020 wildfires, when Keplinger sought fruit in Santa Barbara that had not been affected by smoke, that the opportunity arose to work with the vineyard, thanks to Maggie Harrison and vineyard manager Chris Hammell. Two years later, a block of Grenache planted by Hammell for his own label became the inspiration for Opalus. Situated on an elevated sandy bench with a south-west aspect, the head-trained vines benefit from warm sunshine and cooling winds.
Planted to a Spanish Grenache clone, the fruit produces an alluring balance of sweet and savoury character, with exotic perfume and a beautifully textured palate. Aged in 600L demi-muids, one-third new, the wine reflects Keplinger’s connection to Priorat while remaining distinctly Californian.
