Description

The 2022 vintage at Peter Michael’s Seaview Estate was defined by naturally low yields and heightened concentration. Reduced rainfall led to a drier-than-average growing season and an early start to vine development. Unsettled conditions during flowering significantly limited fruit set, resulting in a notably small crop and naturally concentrated berries. As the season progressed, generally temperate conditions preserved freshness, while a brief period of elevated heat near harvest compressed picking decisions into a narrow window, allowing the fruit to be brought in at optimal balance.

Le Caprice is sourced from some of the estate’s most dramatic terrain, situated at elevations exceeding 1,000 feet on steep, mountainous slopes with predominantly east and north-east exposures. The vineyard benefits from the cooling influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean, tempered by a sunny mountain climate that promotes slow, even ripening. Its complex soils—comprising clay, silt and volcanic gravels—contribute structure, finesse and a subtle mineral dimension. Among Peter Michael’s trio of estate Pinot Noir sites, Le Caprice is recognised for its expressive fruit profile and supple, polished tannins.

In the glass, the 2022 Le Caprice reveals a luminous medium-garnet colour. The aromatic profile is lifted and floral, opening with notes of rose petal alongside wild strawberry, red plum and black cherry, complemented by gentle baking spice and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, vibrant red fruit flavours of strawberry, raspberry and cherry are carried by juicy, finely integrated tannins and a creamy, seamless texture. The finish is elegant and persistent, reflecting both the clarity of the site and the precision of the vintage.

This 2022 release offers an immediately appealing yet finely balanced expression of Le Caprice, combining brightness, aromatic detail and structure. While approachable in its youth, it possesses the harmony and depth to reward careful cellaring over the medium term.
