Description
The 2022 vintage in the Santa Lucia Highlands was shaped by a dry winter and an early start to the growing season, setting the tone for a ripe yet finely balanced Pinot Noir. Limited winter rainfall and persistent spring winds encouraged early budbreak, leading to an accelerated cycle through flowering and fruit set. Slightly warmer conditions throughout the summer brought the fruit to maturity ahead of schedule, with harvest commencing in early September. The result is a wine that combines generosity of fruit with freshness and clarity.
Le Moulin Rouge is sourced from gently sloping vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands of Monterey County, a region renowned for its cool coastal influence and long growing season. The maritime climate and well-drained soils contribute depth and richness while maintaining precision. The Pinot Noir clone, selected from Burgundian Grand Cru origins, naturally yields small clusters and berries, concentrating aroma and flavour. Careful extraction and a considered barrel ageing programme shape the wine’s supple texture and refined tannins.
In the glass, the 2022 Le Moulin Rouge shows a luminous medium-ruby colour. The nose is expressive and layered, offering aromas of black cherry, wild blackberry and dark berry fruit, lifted by floral notes of violet and rose petal. Subtle accents of baking spice and dark chocolate add complexity. The palate opens softly before building intensity through a textured mid-palate, delivering depth, polish and a plush mouthfeel. The finish is long, mouth-watering and harmoniously balanced.
Elegant yet generous, the 2022 Le Moulin Rouge is a confident expression of Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir. Its combination of richness, perfume and structure makes it appealing in its youth, while its balance and depth suggest it will reward short- to medium-term cellaring.
