Jerry Lohr chose Monterey County after nearly a decade of searching for the right site for his first vineyard, well before it was widely recognised as a grape-growing region. He knew that the wind and fog from Monterey Bay, well-draining soils, and the lack of autumnal rainfall (that can damage fruit) would combine to grow world-class grapes that he has continued to make world-class wine from.
