Description
Margarethenhof is a family estate based in Ayl on the Saar, with vineyards divided between the slate slopes of the Saar and the limestone soils of the southern Mosel. Since joining the family domaine with the 2020 vintage, fourth-generation winemaker Nicolas Weber has brought a thoughtful, progressive approach to both vineyard and cellar. A graduate in viticulture and oenology, Nicolas favours gentle pruning, herbicide-free farming and minimal intervention, allowing the character of each vineyard to lead. His wines are predominantly spontaneously fermented and given time to develop naturally, combining traditional Saar precision with a quietly experimental streak. The wines are beautifully precise and expressive, with a striking sense of place: cool Saar freshness, mineral tension and purity, each cuvée reflecting the distinctive slate or limestone soils from which it comes.
Balancing the racing acidity of Riesling grown on the slate stone of the cool Saar region is a drop of residual sugar, making for a wine that pairs beautifully with spice. Expect notes of peach, apricot, and mango all underpinned by a distinct minerality and a full body from the residual sugar.
